The Indonesian National Revolution
The armed and diplomatic struggle against the return of Dutch colonial rule.
Background
Japan occupied the Dutch East Indies in 1942 and encouraged Indonesian nationalism while exploiting the islands' resources. When Japan surrendered in 1945, a power vacuum opened and young nationalists pressed leaders to act.
Course of events
Sukarno and Mohammad Hatta proclaimed independence on 17 August 1945. The Netherlands tried to restore control, launching major military operations in 1947 and 1948, while Indonesian forces and local militias resisted. International pressure and negotiations followed.
Legacy
After the Round Table Conference, the Netherlands transferred sovereignty in December 1949. Indonesia became the largest independent state to emerge from Southeast Asian colonial rule.
